Theater and Music

One of my favorite theatrical moments was this – playing Kayama in a production of “Pacific Overtures.”
From Shy Beginnings to the Spotlight
Performance has been woven into the fabric of my life since childhood. At just six years old, I began my musical journey with the piano. By eight, I had joined a church choir, discovering a deep passion for singing. Despite my early love for music, I was a painfully shy and introverted child, often feeling like an outcast, much like the toys on the Island of Misfit Toys from “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
Concerned about my shyness, my parents heeded the advice of a family member, a talented actress, and enrolled me in an after-school theater program at a local community theater. Little did they know, this decision would change my life.
In the theater, I found my “tribe”—a group of passionate performers who, like me, felt like misfits in their own lives. This newfound community helped me flourish, boosting my confidence and honing my talents. By high school, I was determined to pursue a career in performance and chose to focus on singing. I attended Florida State University to study voice performance.
After completing my undergraduate degree, I took a brief hiatus before heading to the University of South Carolina for graduate studies in theater, with an emphasis on directing and dramaturgy.
Though my parents were supportive, they secretly worried about my future in the arts. Yet, here I am, decades later, thriving in the performing arts as an actor, singer, director, producer, and arts presenter. My journey is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance.
